Nature Breaks

Weymouth has more than its fair share of Nature in all its glory: the Jurassic Coastline, legacy walking trails, gorgeous gardens and nature reserves – and one is located right in the centre of town!

Radipole Lake Nature Reserve offers a fascinating opportunity for all ages to discover more about the beauty of the world around us. There are guided walks to learn about herbs or bats or the Lake itself, Dorset Art Weeks to link natural forms with art and sculpture, and Discovery Days for younger guests to find out all they ever wanted to know about bugs and reptiles…

Radipole Lake is an RSPB reserve with all sorts of birds for keen ornithologists to spot, from the better-known house sparrows, finches and robins to more unusual visitors such as Cetti’s warblers and bitterns.

Only 15 minutes’ walk away is another RSPB reserve, located beside Lodmoor Country Park. Display boards detail the seamarsh birds on the reserve and observation hides enable visitors to view them, with a flat 2.5 km circular walk route around the wildlife area which means wheelchair users can enjoy what the site has to offer too.

For those keen to see more of Nature, Lorton Meadows Reserve, run by the Dorset Wildlife Trust, is an area of unimproved grassland at the edge of Weymouth with bee orchids, barn owls and a wide variety of butterflies.

It is also the start of the Legacy walking trail, one of many trails along the South Dorset Ridgeway ideal for ramblers of all levels of fitness and experience, and all within easy striking distance of Weymouth and The Leam.

At The Leam, we understand the importance of enjoying and protecting our native species and believe in supporting groups who do. So we think it only right to offer all those with RSPB membership a 5% discount on their room rate for a stay of two nights or more when booking via telephone on 01305 784127.
