Weymouth is a jewel in the crown of Dorset, one of the loveliest counties in England, and The Leam is an ideal base from which to explore it and prove for yourself the truth in the classic Wurzels’ song ‘Now Dorset is beautiful, wherever you go…’
From the splendour of the Jurassic Coast with its wealth of beautiful beaches via castles and gardens and forts to the rural idyll of its interior dotted with charming little villages forgotten by time, Dorset provides something to suit every taste.
The Jurassic Coast, England’s first natural World Heritage Site, stretches along 95 miles of coastline and 185 million years of geology. It is a fascinating area to visit on foot, by bike or on a Jurassic safari, to gaze at the iconic archway of Durdle Door above Lulworth Cove or the fossil-filled cliffs of Chesil Beach.
Portland, next to Weymouth, is the home of Portland Stone, the building material made famous by Sir Christopher Wren when he used it to construct St Paul’s Cathedral and other major London monuments, and it’s still quarried today.
For those interested in ancient history, Dorset boasts the largest Iron Age hill fort in Europe, Maiden Castle, constructed in 600 BC.
Besides the natural beauty of Dorset’s Nature Reserves, there is the more formal beauty of Dorset’s award-winning gardens, including Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens and Bennetts Water Gardens, home of the national collection of waterlilies and more than a little reminiscent of Claude Monet’s famous garden at Giverny.
Wherever you want to go, whatever you want to see, The Leam Team are always on hand to help you get the most from your days and welcome you back in the evenings with a soothing drink and a satisfying supper.
